ICYMI: Donalds Joins The Julie Mason Show

WASHINGTON – Congressman Byron Donalds (R-FL) joined The Julie Mason Show on SiriusXM POTUS to discuss his support for ending the Senate filibuster and the need for the Senate to pass the SAVE Act.

Watch the full interview here.

"It's time to end the Senate filibuster. It's not promoting compromise":

"Well, it's been a while. Yeah, the SAVE Act, what it does is very simple. It requires that, you know, to be registered to vote in federal elections, you have to demonstrate your citizenship. You know, that you're an American citizen, that you're valid to vote. And so, we've passed it out of the House. It passed out of the House this year. We passed it out last Congress, and it's languishing in the Senate. And the reason why it's languishing in the Senate, Julie, is because Senate Democrats are not going to vote to end, they're not going to vote to break the filibuster, so that can go to the Senate floor for an up or down vote. This is one of the reasons where I agree with the president. It's time to end the Senate filibuster. It's not promoting compromise. It's actually stopping the actual good policy that needs to happen in our country for the betterment of the American people, simply because of an arcane rule in the Senate that's been around for 100 years. It's not in the Constitution. It was not there in the founding of the republic."

"I think that if there wasn't a filibuster rule, you'd actually get more compromise out of the Senate between Republicans and Democrats":

"Well, look, my view is simple. If you look at every state around our country in the Senate and every state assembly, every state legislature, there is no filibuster rule. That doesn't exist. And I think that if there wasn't a filibuster rule, you'd actually get more compromise out of the Senate between Republicans and Democrats. Right now, you get like kind of a false compromise where they put together these bills that everybody knows isn't going anywhere. And stuff that comes out of the House never really gets a chance to get an up or down vote because they can't break the filibuster. And what it's really led to is the American people continue to be frustrated because if you want to talk about immigration, if you want to talk about housing, if you want to talk about energy, price stability, you're not getting that done with the current Senate filibuster. If anything, the current Senate filibuster has led us to where we are. Time to change it. Time to get rid of it."
