WASHINGTON – This morning, President Donald Trump took sweeping action to make our nation's capital safe again.
President Trump first signed a Presidential Memorandum to restore law and order in the District of Columbia. The Memorandum directs Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to mobilize the D.C. National Guard to address the epidemic of crime in our nation’s capital. The D.C. National Guard will remain mobilized until law and order is restored and Sec. Hegseth will coordinate with State Governors to authorize the orders of any additional National Guard units as needed.
President Trump also signed an Executive Order declaring a crime emergency in D.C. to protect public servants, citizens, tourists, and ensure the safe functioning of the Federal government. The Executive Order invokes President Trump's authority to federalize the Metropolitan Police Department under the leadership of United States Attorney General Pam Bondi. Congressman Byron Donalds (R-FL) released the following statement:
"Crime is out of control in our nation's capital. Residents, tourists, and Members of Congress have been victimized by violent offenders. We must do everything possible to ensure a safe Washington, D.C. for everyone. Thank you President Trump for taking action. We are Making D.C. Safe Again."
