This week, Congress stood in legislative recess, giving me the ability to return to the district. I have had the opportunity to speak with constituents about the concerns of our community and this country, such as inflation, price hikes, crime, and a historic border crisis.
The ever-growing catastrophe at our southern border, heightened by President Biden’s open-border policies, continues to bring tragedy and hardship to our country. Recently, 53 illegal immigrants died attempting to cross the border after being left to die in a human smuggler-owned truck in the scorching heat. This tragedy is yet another devastating result of this administration’s failure to implement sound immigration policies. Over 2.9 million illegal immigrants have been apprehended at the southern border since President Biden took office.
From the early days of his presidency, President Biden has been vocal about his want to remove Title 42, a public health order that allows immigration officers to expel migrants at the southwest border and prevents the spread of infectious diseases in this country. The repealing of Title 42 would incentivize illegal immigrants to attempt to cross the border without consequence. A federal judge blocked the Biden-Harris administration’s attempt to repeal Title 42 in Louisiana in May—yet the administration remains adamant about reversing this critical policy—further jeopardizing the safety of American citizens. This persistence highlights how out-of-touch the White House is with the needs and concerns of the American people.
In 2021, drug overdoses, mostly from opioids, hit an all-time high with over 100,000. An influx of these opioids, the deadliest of which is fentanyl, have crossed our southern border illegally, only to end up in the hands of countless young Americans. With over 7,700 pounds of fentanyl seized at our southern border during FY2022, fentanyl overdoses serve as the leading cause of death for young adults in America. Once again, Biden’s border policies continue to fail the vulnerable among us. Border security is national security, and if we as a country want to secure this country, our current border policies need sensible, substantial, and strict immigration reform.
