WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Rep. Donalds (R-FL) introduced a bipartisan resolution expressing the sense of the U.S. House of Representatives that the United States should support the expansion of domestic nuclear energy production and advanced nuclear technology as a viable source of power to re-establish energy independence.
“Nuclear energy creates less pollution, generates more energy, and is far more reliable and sustainable than any other source of energy,” said Rep. Donalds. “The United States must adapt to the changing times, modernize our energy infrastructure, and support the allocation of federal resources into the advancement and expansion of nuclear energy. The benefits of nuclear energy are countless, and this resolution signifies the bipartisan support in Congress to renovate our nation’s energy makeup and to restore America as an energy leader on the global stage.”
“Nuclear energy is the best clean, sustainable, and reliable energy source to meet our needs as we progress into the 21st Century,” said Rep. Fleischmann. “Congress must do everything possible to incentivize the growth of our domestic nuclear fleet so the United States can remain the world's leader in nuclear technologies and energy production. I am grateful to Rep. Donalds for introducing this resolution to show that the House of Representatives is committed to expanding America's nuclear energy production.”
"Not only is nuclear power a reliable and sustainable form of clean energy, but it is also critical to U.S. national security,” said Rep. Owens. “To be an energy-secure nation, America must immediately step-up efforts to expand nuclear energy, and I am proud to join Rep. Donalds' effort to rebuild domestic independence."
“As a large advocate for U.S. energy independence, I’m proud to join Rep. Donalds on his resolution,” said Rep. Cammack. “The United States is rich in natural resources and has some of the cleanest, safest, and most efficient production practices in the world. Under the Biden administration, our energy independence has been squandered, leaving Americans without jobs and prices sky high. It’s far past time that we tap into our rich resources and unleash our domestic capabilities by removing the red tape and producing our own energy, including nuclear, one of the cleanest sources of renewable energy available.”
“Nuclear energy has proven to be a reliable energy source, with minimal interruptions, lower cost, and smaller carbon footprint than coal or fuel,” said Rep. Bacon. “We need to get back to becoming energy independent, and nuclear needs to be an avenue we explore and understand, not only for consumption but for national security.”
“Nuclear energy is the only 100% emissions-free, reliable source of energy,” said Rep. Buddy Carter. “By investing in nuclear, we are investing in our national security, environment, economy, veterans, and future generations. Now is the time to lay the groundwork and establish the global leadership that will catapult our nation into not just energy independence, but energy dominance.”
“As an engineer who operated nuclear reactors in the Navy, I know firsthand that safe and responsible nuclear energy is crucial to our economic and national security and energy independence,” said Rep. Luria. “I am proud to support this bipartisan resolution that encourages the development of nuclear energy technology and will help move the United States towards a more sustainable and energy-independent future.”
“Nuclear energy has great potential to help America become energy independent again while also creating good paying jobs and boosting our economy,” said Rep. Feenstra. “The Biden Administration’s anti-energy agenda has harmed our economy, main streets and our small businesses. I am happy to sign on to Representative Donald’s resolution to push for expansion of this clean, reliable source of energy to help make us energy independent again.”
Original co-sponsors of this resolution include Representatives: Don Bacon (NE-02), Buddy Carter (GA-01), Kat Cammack (FL-03), Randy Feenstra (IA-04), Chuck Fleischmann (TN-03), Anthony Gonzalez (OH-16), Elaine Luria (VA-02), Nancy Mace (SC-01), Barry Moore (AL-02), Burgess Owens (UT-04), Dean Phillips (MN-03), and John Rose (TN-06).
BACKGROUND:
Reliable and affordable energy is essential to the longevity of our national security and economy. America’s ninety-three commercial nuclear reactors produce enough electricity to power 75 million homes in a safer and less-expensive manner than other sources of alternative energy. Providing for over 470,000 jobs—with three-fourths of nuclear employees being veterans—and annually contributing approximately $60 billion to U.S. GDP, nuclear energy has the potential to provide significant economic stimulus for American communities in need. Nuclear energy stops around 470 million metric tons of carbon pollution from entering the atmosphere each year—which proves that expanding the utilization of nuclear energy can have widespread benefits for our economy and environment. With the proper policy, funding, and innovation in place, we can effectively maintain our nuclear supply chain, create long-lasting American jobs, and re-assert United States leadership across the globe while simultaneously eliminating our reliance on foreign energy sources. Adopting and embracing the usage of nuclear energy is the most cost-effective strategy to assure American energy independence and global leadership for generations to come.
